King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Flying Microtonal Banana

Forget about the world. Forget about the reality. Forget about the cover art. Forget about the weird band name and LPs title. Forget the fact this band released 9 albums in 5 years. Forget about the prejudice towards this record. Just listen and forget. Let the trance, psychedelia and unreality of those songs guide you through magnificent artistic achievement. You thought that psychedelic rock was outdated and its only saviour was Tame Impala? Just listen and forget. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard will guide you.

It seems that Australia might become the new mainstream haven of psychedelic rock. Move over San Francisco, make place for Perth and Melbourne. Thank you for your service Haight-Ashbury, let Great Victoria and Great Sandy Deserts take over.

At first, you can hear trance psychedelic music, which resembles the good ol’ Grateful Dead, 60s Acid Trips, all those video clips you know from hippie-driven documentaries you saw in high school. But then all this energy kicks in. You can feel Kraftwerk’s motorik, which sometimes blend into punk or, conversely, spreads to Iommi’s riffs, but with oriental singalongs. The Flaming Lips gone full Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung, but harder and less preety.

I’m not saying this is state-of-the-art album. I’m not saying it’s innovatory or extremely modern. I’m not saying that you won’t be tired after listening to it, because you will. But you will be satisfied as well. And you will want more after a while. Or to listen to their previous, artistically different, but aesthetically similar records.

Yeah, this album is really weird. However, every long-time fan of San Francisco Sound, psychedelic movement of 60s, or even every enthusiast of Tame Impala/early-Kraftwek-like bands, which deliveres a new rendition of what once was an art to get lost in. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard are expected to release four more albums this year.
